Improving Sanitation Practices in Ghana (video)
Using a community-driven approach that involves residents and a broad range of stakeholders, Global Communities is helping to improve availability and access to water and sanitation services through the WASH-UP program. With funding from USAID, Global Communities is working in three slum communities of Accra and two slum communities in the urban area of Sekondi-Takoradi to improve the water supply, create and upgrade sanitation infrastructure, promote hygiene behavior change, and support improved governance around these municipal services.
Through the WASH-UP program, Global Communities, USAID and the municipal governements of Accra and Sekondi-Takoradi are employing a Behavior Change Communication (BCC) strategy to facilitate and encourage health-promoting behaviors such as construction of household latrines and stopping open defecation.
