Global Communities Ghana has signed a five-year partnership with the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation to help meet the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) needs of selected communities from two mining towns in the Western Region.

As part of the partnership, Global Communities will plan and implement WASH infrastructure projects in underserved communities that have struggled to access clean water. Global Communities will provide technical and financial support around Behavior Change Communication (BCC) and implement capacity building and Social BCC activities to ensure sustainability of the infrastructure projects. Global Communities will also supervise construction to ensure it complies with all Government of Ghana laws, codes and regulations, as well as the Foundation’s and USAID requirements. And it will provide technical advice to the Foundation at various stages of the project as needed and arrange   joint field visits with the team from the Foundation.

The project builds on several projects that Global Communities has implemented throughout Ghana for decades to create sustainable improvements in water and sanitation access while improving hygiene behaviors. Currently Global Communities implements the USAID-funded WASH for Health (W4H) program in over 30 target districts. W4H accelerates sustainable improvement in water and sanitation access and hygiene behaviors through improved sector governance and private sector engagement.

“Global Communities is delighted to work with Gold Fields Ghana Foundation to help break down barriers that have traditionally left the poorest districts in Ghana without water and sanitation initiatives that literally save lives,” said Alberto Wilde, Country Director – Ghana and Chief of Party – WASH for Health. “This partnership will have a tremendous impact toward ensuring that more communities have a direct role in leading their own health and sanitation.”

The Gold Fields Ghana Foundation is the Corporate Social Responsibility arm of Gold Field Ghana, a Gold mining company operating in the Western Region of Ghana. It is the first Foundation set up by a mining company in Ghana and focuses on health, water and sanitation; education; agriculture and infrastructure.
