Roberta Contin, Global Communities country director in Yemen, says e-vouchers are even more crucial in the Middle Eastern country as instability spreads.
Through the U.S. Food for Peace program, Global Communities uses e-vouchers to implement a three-year program and connect 23,360 households with critical food aid, according to Contin.
Despite recent sectarian violence in Yemen, Contin said they have been able to implement the program on schedule.
Global Communities is first to implement the coveted e-vouchers system in its food aid program in Yemen, and the result has made the organization’s progress in the Middle Eastern country one of the most productive in its history.
E-vouchers, a point of contention in the ongoing food aid reform debate happening around the United States, limit the need for importing food aid commodities from other countries. Many NGOs and critics of current food aid policies say commodities are too expensive and complicated to import, and that e-vouchers could simplify the process and save millions of dollars annually.
The impact and importance of e-vouchers is palpable, Contin explained, and even more crucial as instability spreads and Yemenis lose access to important infrastructure.
