How Recycling Programs Fuel the Economy in Developing Countries (video)
Global Communities’ Brian English, Director of Program Innovation, discusses on TakePart Live how our Trash to Treasure program in India is creating legitimate jobs for marginalized workers through recycling. More than 400 tons of waste is recycled in the city of Bangalore by informal waste collectors each day. An estimated 20,000 people in Bangalore alone risk their health and safety to make their living digging through landfills, vacant lots and household garbage. Through the Trash to Treasure program, supported by the Caterpillar Foundation, Global Communities is working with the municipal authorities in Bangalore to formalize the recycling process and establish recycling centers in every neighborhood. As a result, the program is helping bring this group of marginalized workers out of the shadows by providing them with legitimacy and safe, secure working environments.
