Global Communities YIEDIE Graduate Makes BBC 100 Women of 2018 List

BBC 100 Women has announced its list of 100 inspiring and influential women from around the world for 2018. Global Communities is proud to announce that one of the participants of our YIEDIE program in Ghana, Ruth Medufia, has made the list. Ruth, number 58 on the list, is a 27-year-old female welder who lives in an urban slum community in Ghana and aspires to be a role model for young women in the construction industry.
Ruth learned skills through the Youth Inclusive Entrepreneurial Development Initiative For Employment (YIEDIE), which is working to create economic opportunities in Ghana’s construction sector for disadvantaged youth and is implemented by Global Communities in partnership with Mastercard Foundation. YIEDIE aims to reach more than 23,000 youth with training with technical, life and/or entrepreneurship skills leading to employment. The project applies an integrated youth-led market-systems model to improve the capacity of youth and service providers across the value chain. YIEDIE targets five of Ghana’s six largest cities—Accra, Kumasi, Sekondi-Takoradi, Ashaiman and Tema with the aim of creating increased employment (including self-employment) in the construction sector by targeted youth; and fostering increased coordination and support for a better enabling environment by construction sector stakeholders.
