CHF India: Pune Slum Atlas Released

As part of the SCALE-UP slum upgrading program, CHF worked with local NGO partner, Mashal to develop a slum atlas that provides demographic information on Pune’s 477 slums. This type of data is critical to slum upgrading efforts because it provides governments, NGOs and other social institutions with an in-depth picture of the magnitude and characteristics of the slum population in Pune. NGO comes up with unique slum atlas

A city-based NGO, Maharashtra Social Housing and Action League (Mashal), has come up with a unique slum atlas depicting 477 slums spread over 14 regional ward offices of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). The creation the 450-page atlas would enable the civic body to formulate policies and plan projects regarding slum rehabilitation in the city with greater precision.
The project, which took three years for the NGO to complete, was jointly taken up by the PMC, the developers of the city and the CHF International, a social organisation working for positive changes for low and moderate income groups. On Tuesday, Mashal presented copies of the atlas to these three stake holders. The executive director of Mashal, Sharad Mahajan, has asked the stakeholders for suggestions in the atlas.
Speaking to DNA Mahajan said that the atlas contains information and maps of all the identified slums spread across the city and have information about the area of slum, number of houses and population. Read the full article.

Nearly 32.5 per cent of the population of Pune lives in slums, a recent study has revealed. The study also found that the 477 slum pockets in the city lie on just about 2.34 per cent of the total land area of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
NGO Mashal has prepared a ‘Slum Atlas of Pune City, which shows that 11,50,000 people (2,11,423 families) reside in slums in the city. The study was conducted from 2008 by actual mapping of slums and doing a ground survey. The findings were presented before the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Tuesday. The Atlas will be officially released next month.
The PMC’s Environment Status Report (ESR) has been showing the slum population of the city as 40 per cent of the total population. However, civic officials and Mashal claim that it was a crude figure and wasn’t backed with detailed study.”The figure that we have now arrived at is the most realistic one as house-to-house survey was conducted by our volunteers. A rigorous exercise was undertaken to gather the data. Until now, there was no statistical analysis done to back the 40 per cent figure,” Sharad Mahajan, executive director of Mashal, said.
The slum atlas was prepared in collaboration with the urban community development department of the PMC, CHF international, India, and the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA). Read the full article.
