CHF Recognizes Earth Day 2012: Mobilize the Earth

On Earth Day, which takes place each year on April 22nd, we recognize the importance of clean air, clean water, and the importance of maintaining the integrity of the natural world around us. CHF is working in many of its programs to promote environmental sustainability and contribute to the body of knowledge in regards to “green construction” practices. By implementing programs that are sustainable and “green,” we are helping the communities in which we work improve their surroundings and their environment.

West Bank and Gaza — Safeer Children’s Center

In the West Bank, CHF’s green construction initiatives are creating a model for the future of environmentally sustainable buildings in the Middle East. The Safeer Children’s Center incorporated double-glass windows that improve insulation and reduce heating costs, and uses recycled wood and other construction materials to reduce waste. In addition, the building has an interactive learning center for children, educating a new generation on energy efficiency.

Haiti — Soil Conservation and Reforestation Project at Coq Chante

Among CHF’s many initiatives in Haiti, we work to encourage environmental restoration and sustainability in the nation, which has suffered from severe deforestation and environmental degradation. By working to conserve soil and replant devastated flora and fauna, we are helping to increase environmental integrity in Haiti.

India — Waste to Resources

In India, CHF’s urban slum upgrading program has worked to improve waste management and recycling in Bangalore. Waste management is a huge issue in cities around the developing world, and CHF worked with local partners to increase their capacity for waste service delivery and recycling.

Kosovo — The Green School

CHF’s green school in Kosovo is the first of its kind. The project incorporates the most up-to-date energy technology as part of an energy efficiency pilot program. The school is providing an example of geothermal, solar and other green technologies available for construction in Kosovo.

Ghana — Cleaning Up Trash to Benefit Fishermen

In Ghana, fishermen’s livelihoods were being affected by trash accumulating on the beach in Accra. CHF’s YES program worked with them to find a solution and clean up the area, improving their catch and increasing their income.
