Helping Communities Rebuild
From 2001-2011,Global Communities helped communities affected by hostilities in Afghanistan through funding from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and a grant from the U.S. State Department’s Bureau for Population, Refugees and Migration (BPRM). Global Communities’ programs in Afghanistan focused on the provision of shelter and much needed humanitarian assistance. Completed programs include:
Through the Afghan Shelter and Settlements Initiative Supporting Transition (ASSIST) program, Global Communities provided humanitarian assistance through an integrated package of shelter and settlements interventions to vulnerable populations with a special focus on returnees and internally displaced persons (IDPs). The program assisted more than 3,000 households with improved shelter, health and sanitation facilities in the city of Kabul.
The State-Department funded Restoring Economies and Services to Assist Reintegration and Transition (RESTART) assisted refugees in Jalalabad re-start their lives and re-integrate into society, with a special focus on women. Through RESTART,Global Communities helped over 3,000 people to develop vocational skills and find sustainable sources of employment.
With funding from USAID/OFDA, Global Communities implemented the Facilitating Afghan Settlement and Transition (FAST) program. Through FAST, Global Communities helped 8,000 households in Jalalabad with improved shelter, environment and livelihoods.
