India: Slum Improvement Program (slideshow)
With funding from the John Deere Foundation, the Slum Improvement Program is working in Pune to improve the living conditions and livelihoods of slum residents. The program focuses on making deep impacts in 6 slums and 4 villages while strengthening bottom-up planning practices and institutionalizing new poverty reduction programs within the local government.
Some highlights of the program to date:
Four Urban Resource Centers have been set up with two more being planned
Nearly 3,600 households surveyed in the target communities
Nearly 1,000 students participated in educational activities
All target communities have participated in micro-planning to determine infrastructure problems and other community needs
More than 600 women’s self help groups have been assessed and recruited to participate in livelihoods training
